Drama

Synopsis: Joymati ( Joymoti) ( Eng. the saviour ) (Assamese. জয়মতী) After its victory in the famous Saraighat battle against the Mughal invaders in the year 1670, the Ahom kingdom was extended upto the Manah river. Although the valiant lieutenant Lachit Borphukan wore the crown of victory, however, history depicts that the device and strategy instrumental in winning the war were actually planned by the king’s counsellor Aton Burhagohain. Throughout the span of fifteen years i.e. from 1662 to 1677 when the Ahom kingdom was ruled by six diffrent rulers, Aton Burhagohain managed to retain his status as the king’s counsellor. The Ahom kings viz. Chunyatfa, Chuklenfa, Chuhung, Prince Gobar, Chuzinfa and Chudaifa ascended the throne, one after the other, for brief periods. The inner strife between the nobles such as the “Phukans” and the “Baruahs” cost the lives of many princes unnecessarily. None of the rulers, who ruled the Ahom kingdom during the eleven years after 1670, died a natural death. People suffered miserably under bad governance and constant political upheaval. To top it all, Lalukshola Borphukan assassinated both King Chudaifa and Aton Burhagohain and installed a young boy from the Chamoguria dynasty called Chulikfa(Ratnadhwaj Singha) on the throne inspite of the fact that there were a sizable number of royal princes eligible to be king. This marked the beginning of the black days of Ahom rule when power hungry Lalukshola Borphukan made the king a puppet in his hands. Lalukshola Borphukan easily convinced the frail and immature king that the other princes might stage a coup and capture the throne at any moment and so it was necessary to either inflict upon them permanent physical injuries or put them to death. Thus began the era of secret killings for political gain. All the eligible princes, except Godapani, were either injured or killed, one after the other, by the secret agents of Lalukshola Borphukan inorder to safeguard his political supremacy.
Godapani was a valiant, undaunted prince of the royal Tungkhungia clan, His wife, Joymati herself, was an intelligent and courageous lady with deep political foresight. Realising that Godapani could not confront the armed force deployed against him by King Chulikfa, she requested her husband to flee from the capital. Having failed to capture Godapani, the king had Joymati tortured inhumanly in an attempt to extract news of her husband, but in vain. Joymati suffered silently in the hands of her tormentors and never uttered a single word till her last breath. Joymati could foresee that Godapani was the only person who was capable of bringing back stability and peace to the tumultuous socio-political environment prevalent in the Ahom Kingdom by uprooting the autocratic rule of the puppet monarch Chulikfa and his counsellor Lalukshola Borphukan. She sacrificed her life for this noble cause. True to her vision, Godapani’s ascent to the throne saw the end of autocracy and marked the beginning of a glorious chapter of Ahom rule.
The golden era of Ahom rule owed its roots to Joymati’s indomitable patriotism and sacrifice. Unity of a nation is often inspired by some glorious or tragic tales from history. Joymati’s tragic yet glorious story is the precious necklace of unity of the Assamese people. The need of the hour is to draw strength and inspiration from Joymati’s indomitable national spirit and resolve to build a prosperous Assam.
